The Northern Lights are caused when charged particles from the Sun collide with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen in our atmosphere.

The colors of the aurora indicate how high up the collision occurred.

  • Red – 150 miles above Earth
  • Green – 100 miles above Earth
  • Violet – 60 miles above Earth
  • Blue – Less than 60 miles above Earth
