Empire Of The Ants

Empire of the Ants is an episode of the BBC documentary series Natural World. It is narrated by David Attenborough.

Ants can be found on every continent except Antarctica. There are a few places on Earth that did not have any native ants but individual ants hitched a ride on traveling humans. Greenland is an example of a place that did not ants before humans inadvertently carried them them.

One species of ant, the Mycocepurus smithii, found primarily in South and Central America doesn’t have males. The queen is asexual and reproduces only females.

Ants do not have ears. Instead of hearing special sensors on their feet and knees allow them to ‘hear’ by feeling vibrations in the ground.

The average ant colony contains contains thousands of ants. Super colonies have been found around the world in places like Japan, the United States, Australia, and Europe that contain over 300 million ants.
